Community Notification of Passing of Mr. Tapanes Mondeja

April 29, 2020

It is with a profound sense of sadness that I write to you in order to announce the passing of a beloved and respected member of our community, Mr. José Ramón Tapanes Mondeja.  While pursuing his Master of Science in Nursing – Family Nurse Practitioner Degree at United States University, he worked as a Surgical/Technical Assistant in North Bergen, New Jersey. He died on April 22 at the age of 48.

José was born into a family of medical professionals in Rachuelo Villa Clara, Cuba.  He trained and practiced as a surgeon before he and his family immigrated to the United States.  José enrolled in United States University in order to start a new professional life as a Nurse Practitioner.  He was dedicated to the notion of patient-centered medicine and believed that the skills and practices acquired as part of this program could be used as a starting point on the long road of helping his community back home. As importantly, he saw his education as a means of creating solutions for disadvantaged and underserved patients.

Deeply devoted to his church, friends, and family, José was predeceased by his three-year-old son, Jan Marcos.  He is survived by his loving wife Maria Morales Tapanes, and this sons Alejandro, Raúl, and Abel.  United States University will honor José’s accomplishments and memory by bestowing his Master of Science in Nursing Degree upon his family.
