Dr. George Peraza-Smith, who serves on the Proficiencies for the APRN Gerontological Specialist Writing Group and on the Expert Panel for APRN Gerontological Specialist Proficiencies persented at the AANP conference. The Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association (GAPNA) developed a white paper on outlining the proficiencies for the APRN Gerontological Specialist. There is a “gray Tsunami” of older adults with 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 years old every day. This lecture reviewed the twelve proficiencies for the APRN Gerontological Specialist outlined in the consensus statement on proficiencies. This identified specialty represents the top of the Consensus Model focused on specialization. The Specialist will have ongoing focused education, significant clinical experience with older adults and fluency with advanced clinical decision-making. The lecture addressed: Who are these NPs?
