Position Summary

Provide advising and other services to international students and their dependents. Guide international applicants through recruitment, enrollment and registration process.  Assist with international student orientation, weekend sessions and other activities as needed or assigned.  Maintain and comply with SEVIS regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Specific job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist with day to day international student enrollment and affairs.  Responds to inquiries received and resolve questions or concerns with the intent of turning inquiries into enrollments
  • Advise International students, including prospective students, enrolled students, and alumni on the I-20 application process and the visa classifications
  • Guide international applicants through process.  Complete registration preparation/execution and help resolve enrollment discrepancies
  • Actively interact with College’s to stay abreast of program changes, and to communicate frequently expressed student questions or concerns
  • Assist with International Orientations and weekend sessions for students and annual graduation reception for students and parents
  • Assist with advising of international students facing significant problems (e.g., suspension or dismissal, failure to maintain status); manage student crises (e.g. mental and physical health emergencies)
  • Act as an advocate/liaison for international students and promote cross-cultural awareness with faculty, staff, and students; update faculty/staff school-wide on impact of immigration regulations on international students
  • Provide suggestions on appropriate policies and procedures on new and existing data collection; maintain reports and alerts
  • Maintain the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) for the university (including testing); develop, design and distribute queries/reports to identify and communicate with students on SEVIS-required reporting actions
  • May serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) as authorized by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to review, issue and sign immigration documents for students
  • Initiate and facilitate regular archiving of student immigration files
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor degree preferred or equivalent combination education and experience
  • 3-5 year’s previous experience; preferably in an institution of higher education

Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated computer skills in word processing, spreadsheet and electronic mail software
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and a high level of professional integrity
  • Effective problem solving and decision making skills
  • Maintains a positive, helpful, constructive attitude and work relationship with supervisor, university staff, students, and the community
  • Strong time management and organizational skills in a dynamic, constantly changing environment
  • Attention to detail and quality focused

The essential functions of the job are usually performed in an environmentally controlled facility where the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This position may involve working in a combination of office and classroom environments.

While performing the job duties, the employee is regularly required to sit; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee may sometimes be required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus.
